Agathocles to jedna ze światowych legend Grindcore. Zespół pochodzi z Belgii i jak się sami zaczęli określać, definiując własny styl, grają Mincecore - pierwotną surową minimalistyczną formę Grindcore'a, poruszającą w swych lirykach głównie tematy dotyczące problemów socjo-politycznych, anarchii, czy też nawiązujące do praw zwierząt, zanieczyszczenia środowiska, ekologii itp.
Odpowiedzialnych za inicjatywę powstania Agathocles było dwóch typów, znanych już w belgijskim podziemiu maniaków ekstremalnego grania oraz promotorów sceny Hardcore Punk, później Grindcore'a: Jan Frederickx oraz Erwin Vandenbergh, którzy oprócz wydawalnia zinów i licznych kompilacji udzielali się również kilka lat wcześniej w takich zespołach jak: Squadrons of Death, Dead oraz Extrem (totalny Crossover Grind Punk Hardcore-owy rozpierdol). Ich początkowe inspiracje muzyczne, to głównie muza takich zespołów jak: Lärm, Slayer, Bathory, Keizershof Disaster, czy Hellhammer. Do powyższego zestawu szybko dołączyły inne, akurat rozwijające swe skrzydła młode formacje jak: Napalm Death, Majesty, Terrorizer, Repulsion, Fear of God oraz Carcass.
Pierwotnie zespół powstał pod nazwą Necromantical Destructor w Mol w 1985 roku. Niedługo później przemianowując się na Hellsaw, pod którego szyldem wydali trzy demówki, a następnie, gdy w 1987 r. do ww. dwójki dołączył kolejny szaleniec i totalnie zakręcony człowiek Ronny, nazwa zmieniła się ostatecznie na Agathocles. Erwin zajął się perkusją, Jan gitarą i wokalami, a Ronny basem i zaczęło się pierwsze rehearsal-owanie, do którego przystąpił również jako gitarzysta Jakke. Niedługo później powstały pierwsze studyjne nagrania w tym demówka "Cabbalic Gnosticism". Mniej więcej w tym samym czasie zespół ruszył też ostro z graniem, dając serię koncertów u boku lokalnych formacji jak: Ear Damage, Tyfoon, Torment, Distress, Mind Exit, Youth Crew, Occultation, Chronic Disease oraz z gośćmi z zagranicy jak: Napalm Death, Pestilence, Extreme Noise Terror, Chronical Diarrhoea, Cry of Terror, Violent Mosquitos, Total Mosh Project, Scum (Ger), czy Crowd of Isolated. Od tego czasu skład zespołu często rotował oraz wielokrotnie się zmieniał, a jego jedynym grającym od początku członkiem pozostał Jan Frederickx.
Do dziś Agathocles na swym koncie ma odegrane niezliczone ilości koncertów, zagranych podczas wielu festiwali i licznych tras, jak też trzynaście longplayów oraz bardzo pokaźną liczbę wydanych splitów, EP-ek oraz rehearsali.We wrześniu br. za sprawą naszego rodzimego Selfmadegod Rec. ukazał się ich najnowszy album zatytułowany "Commence to Mince", którego w całości możecie posłuchać z linku BC poniżej.
Ja osobiście najbardziej se cenię ich trzy pierwsze płyty, liczne wczesne splity oraz EP-ki, jak też materiały z wczesnych rehearsali i demosów.
