Powstała 1996 roku w Göteborgu z inicjatywy członków zespołów At the Gates i Satanic Slaughter. W 2003 roku The Haunted otrzymał nagrodę szwedzkiego przemysłu fonograficznego Grammis w kategorii "Best Hard Rock Band" za album "One Kill Wonder".
W swej twórczości grupa poruszyła takie zagadnienia jak przemoc czy polityka.
