To jeden z tych zespołów do którego potęgi musiałem dojrzeć. Niby to funk rock, ale też space rock, 100% amerykański rock psychodeliczny, należą też do pionierów afro-futuryzmu. Moim skromnym zdaniem drugi album można bez wstydu postawić obok np. "Tago Mago". No i grał z nimi basista Big Black.
Lirycznie też są w cięższej kategorii wagowej od np. Jamesa Browna.
The album and its title track [Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow], a feedback-drenched number taking a third of the album's length, introduces the subversion of Christian themes explored on later songs, describing a mystical approach to salvation in which "the Kingdom of Heaven is within" and achievable through freeing one's mind, after which one's "ass" will follow. Many of the songs (such as the title track and "Eulogy and Light") subvert Christian themes, including the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm.
Reportedly, "Maggot Brain" was the nickname of Hazel.[12] Other sources say the title is a reference to band leader George Clinton finding his brother's "decomposed dead body, skull cracked, in an apartment in Newark, New Jersey."
The cover artwork depicts a screaming black woman's head coming out of the earth; it was photographed by Joel Brodsky and features model Barbara Cheeseborough.[15] The album's liner notes are a polemic on fear provided by the Process Church of the Final Judgement, an obscure Satanist religious cult.[3] According to author Rickey Vincent, the organization's presumed association with mass-murderer Charles Manson, along with the album's foreboding themes and striking artwork, lent Funkadelic the image of a "death-worshipping black rock band."
